Exchange 2013 – Reseed a corrupt search catalogue

Microsoft Exchange search services are not functioning, and search results are not being displayed. On further investigation you see the following event being logged on the Exchange Server.

Event ID: 123
Level: Error
Source: ExchangeStoreDB

At <timestamp> the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Database <identity> copy on this server experienced a corrupted search catalog. Consult the event log on the server for other "ExchangeStoreDb" and "MSExchange Search Indexer" events for more specific information about the failure. Reseeding the catalog is recommended via the ‘Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy’ task.

The error suggests that there is a corrupt Exchange Search Catalogue.

Running the “ContentIndex State” and/or Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus may also highlight issues if it returns a result of anything other than “Healthy”…. such as “failed” or “unkown”

The following steps will allow you to reseed the search catalogue by recreating the content index catalogue.

1. Stop Services

a. Stop-Service MSExchangeFastSearch

b.  Stop-Service HostControllerService

2. Backup the Exchange content index catalogue by renaming the following folder (eg. to .old)

%ExchangeInstallPath\Mailbox\<name of mailbox database>_Catalog\<GUID>12.1.Single.

3. Start Services

a. Start-Service MSExchangeFastSearch

b. Start-Service HostControllerService

4. Monitor by using the following command

Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus | FL Name,*Index*

Seeding may take hours depending on the size of the exchange database. During the process, the result will return a crawling status. On completion, the value will show Healthy.

5. Monitor event logs for further errors.

6. You can remove old folder to free up space once seeding is complete
